What to See and Do - in Mugello, Fiesole, Chianti
Mugello
The Mugello valley extends to the north and east of Florence, and is a scenic area, covered in dense forest and criss-crossed with walking paths and gurgling streams, with the Apeninnes surrounding its northern and eastern perimeter. The Mugello has some of Tuscany's prettiest villages and, as original home of the Medici family, still has many Medicean villas.
The Mugello hosts one of the most important international race tracks, that of the Mugello Autodromo, which hosts the Moto GP every year.
Lake Bilancino, a man-made lake/reservoir, is the perfect location for enjoying water sports, from sailing, wind and kite surfing to kayaking.
Golf
Opened for play in 1995, the 18 hole golf course Poggio dei Medici was immediately recognized by the popular Italian magazine "Il Mondo del Golf" as the best new golf course in Italy, and it has since beuilt an international reputation as one of the finest in Italy. It was recently selected by "Condè Nast Traveller" for its "Hot List" as "The best Golf Club", ahead of the likes of the K Club in Ireland and the Greebrier in the USA.
There are extensive practise facilities, with a Driving Range complete with shaded driving bays and separate Putting and Pitching Greens. Golf Carts and Clubs are available for rent.
The Course is open all the year round, seven days a week. A PGA Academy Professional is available for private lessons. Poggio dei Medici has been the home of the Ladies Italian Open from 1999 to 2003, on the professional Ladies European Tour.

Fiesole, the Estruscan Village
Fiesole is a delightful village half way between La Paggeria and Florence. Once home to the Etruscans, Fiesole pre-dates Florence in terms of human settlement. Today, all that is left of the Etruscans is the Archeological Park that every summer hosts the arts festival "Estate Fiesolana", held in the Teatro which dates to the 1st century BC.
Chianti Rufina Wine
The Mugello Rufina area is one of Tuscany's lesser known wine producing areas of the Chianti wine region and the Strada del Vino makes for a pleasant trip along the Sieve river visiting the cantine or wine producing outlets where you can sample and buy Chianti bottled wine at reasonable prices. The small town of Rufina is home to the Museo della Vita e del Vino della Val di Sieve (Museum of Vineyards & Wine of the Sieve Valley).
If you're interested in a wine tasting tour (or other tours of the area), let us know as we organize them directly from La Paggeria!
